I'll never forget it.It was on the Port Harcourt – Aba expressway, somewhere between Port Harcourt and Aba road junction, that stretch that turns into a parking lot the moment there's any rain or any reason at all, really. It was a Friday evening, which was already a mistake on my part. A fully loaded articulated tanker had lost control trying to navigate a bad portion of the road and tilted sideways, half-blocking both lanes. Vehicles from both directions had piled up trying to squeeze through the same narrow gap, and within thirty minutes, nobody was moving anywhere.I was in a commercial vehicle, one of those Sienna buses that somehow always manages to be both overcrowded and overheated at the same time. We were eleven passengers inside, including a woman with a baby who would not stop crying, a man who kept reciting Bible verses under his breath like he was casting out the spirit of traffic, and someone eating fried fish whose smell filled every corner of that vehicle. We sat there for close to four hours. Yes, four hours. The sun went down while we were still on that road. People stepped out, sat on the roadside, hawkers appeared from nowhere selling groundnut, banana, and pure water like they had been waiting for exactly this moment. By the time we moved, everyone in that bus had either made peace with God or quarrelled with a stranger. What I remember most is the silence that fell when the vehicles finally started moving. No cheering. Just a collective exhale, like the whole road had been holding its breath.
