The brain relies heavily on glucose as its primary source of energy. When blood sugar drops too low, the brain is one of the first organs to suffer. Symptoms can appear within minutes and may include sweating, trembling, confusion, blurred vision, seizures, loss of consciousness, and in severe cases, death if treatment is not given promptly. Hyperglycemia, on the other hand, usually causes damage more gradually. Persistently high blood sugar can injure blood vessels, nerves, kidneys, eyes, and the heart over time. Although severe hyperglycemia can also become a medical emergency, it often develops over hours to days rather than minutes. In simple terms, high blood sugar tends to harm the body over time, while very low blood sugar can threaten life much more quickly. This is why both extremes are dangerous, and maintaining a healthy blood glucose level is essential for normal body function.
