Before learning how to analyse the financial markets, we must understand what technical analysis actually means. 1️⃣ The Definition Technical analysis is the study of price movements and trading activity on charts to identify patterns, trends, and potential future market movements. Rather than focusing primarily on a company's financial statements or the economic value of an asset, technical analysts study how the market behaves. We use charts to investigate questions such as: Is the market trending upward? Is the market trending downward? Is the price moving sideways? Where might important support and resistance levels exist? The purpose is to develop informed analytical scenarios, not to predict the future with certainty. 2️⃣ What Does a Technical Analyst Study? There are three important foundations. A. Price: Price shows what buyers and sellers have agreed to pay for an asset at a particular moment. By studying price movements, we can examine the market's direction and behaviour. B. Charts: Charts display price movements over time. Common chart types include: Line charts Bar charts Candlestick charts We will study candlestick charts in our next lesson because they provide useful information about price movements within each period. C. Patterns and Structure: Technical analysts study recurring behaviours and relationships, including: Trends and trend reversals Support and resistance Breakouts and pullbacks Chart patterns Fibonacci relationships Elliott Wave structures These tools help us organise market information and evaluate possible scenarios. 3️⃣ The Three Basic Market Conditions Let's begin with three fundamental concepts. Uptrend: Price generally moves upward, often forming higher highs and higher lows. Downtrend: Price generally moves downward, often forming lower highs and lower lows. Sideways Market: Price moves within a relatively defined range without establishing a sustained upward or downward trend. Learning to distinguish these conditions is one of the first steps toward becoming a competent technical analyst. 4️⃣ Does Technical Analysis Always Work? No. No analytical method can eliminate uncertainty from financial markets. A pattern that appeared successful in the past may fail in the future. Unexpected news, changing market conditions, and other factors can influence prices. That is why responsible analysts combine their analysis with risk management, clearly defined invalidation levels, and an understanding of uncertainty. Remember: An analytical scenario is not a guarantee. 5️⃣ Your First Practical Exercise Imagine Bitcoin is trading at $60,000. Over several days, its price moves as follows: Day 1: $60,000 Day 2: $62,000 Day 3: $64,000 Day 4: $63,000 Day 5: $66,000 Answer these questions: Question 1: Is Bitcoin generally moving upward or downward during this period Question 2: Does one downward move automatically mean the uptrend has ended Question 3: What additional price information would you want to examine before concluding that the trend has reversed? Share your answers in the comments. Explain your reasoning rather than simply guessing! Final Thought Technical analysis is not about knowing the future. It is about studying market behaviour, identifying meaningful relationships, evaluating possibilities, and managing risk when making decisions. In this academy, we will learn these principles step by step, from the foundations to more advanced analytical techniques. Next lesson: Understanding Candlestick Charts.
