Have you heard of the small community in Bayelsa State that changed Nigeria's economic history? 🇳🇬<div><br></div><div>Welcome to Oloibiri, in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State the historic oilfield where Nigeria's first commercially viable crude oil discovery was made in January 1956.</div><div><br></div><div>The discovery was made by Shell D'Arcy, the company that later became Shell-BP. Nigeria's first shipment of crude oil followed in February 1958.</div><div><br></div><div>But here's something many Nigerians don't know: the historic first oil well is located in Otuabagi, within the wider historic Oloibiri oilfield. A 2024 court-approved settlement recognised Otuabagi as the host community of that first well.</div><div><br></div><div>The discovery changed Nigeria's place in the global energy industry. Yet the story of the communities around the oilfield also raises important questions about development, environmental protection and the benefits local people should receive from the resources beneath their land.</div><div><br></div><div>A project called the Oloibiri Museum and Research Centre was officially flagged off in 2023 to preserve this important part of Nigerian history. It was intended to document the evolution of the country's oil industry and honour the historic discovery.</div><div><br></div><div>Imagine visiting the place where a discovery helped shape the economic future of an entire nation!</div><div><br></div><div>📍 LOCATION: Oloibiri historic oilfield, Ogbia LGA, Bayelsa State.</div><div><br></div><div>Have you ever visited Bayelsa?
