In our previous lessons, we explored candlestick charts and multiple-timeframe analysis. Today, we're learning how to identify and draw trendlines and channels. These are important technical analysis tools that help us understand the direction and boundaries of price movements. 1️⃣ What Is a Trendline? A trendline is a straight line drawn on a price chart to connect significant swing highs or swing lows. Trendlines help analysts visualise the direction of a market trend and identify areas where price may react. 2️⃣ Types of Trendlines There are three basic types: A. Uptrend Trendline An upward-sloping trendline is generally drawn by connecting significant higher lows. It helps identify the rising structure of an uptrend. B. Downtrend Trendline A downward-sloping trendline is generally drawn by connecting significant lower highs. It helps identify the declining structure of a downtrend. C. Horizontal Trendline A horizontal trendline connects significant price levels that are approximately equal. It can help identify areas of repeated support or resistance. 3️⃣ How Do We Draw Trendlines? Follow these steps: Identify significant swing highs and swing lows. Select the relevant points that define the trend. Draw a straight line connecting those points. Observe how price behaves when it approaches the line. Two points are sufficient to draw an initial trendline, but a third meaningful reaction can provide additional confirmation. Avoid forcing a line through unrelated price movements just to make it fit. 4️⃣ What Is a Price Channel? A price channel consists of two approximately parallel trendlines that contain a portion of price movement. The two boundaries help us visualise the market's trading range within an established direction. Common types include: Ascending channel: Both boundaries slope upward. Descending channel: Both boundaries slope downward. Horizontal channel: Both boundaries are approximately horizontal. In an ascending channel, the lower boundary can act as support while the upper boundary can act as resistance. The opposite relationship applies to a descending channel. 5️⃣ Trendline vs Channel A trendline is a single line used to identify a directional price relationship. A channel uses two parallel boundaries to describe a broader price movement. Both tools can help analysts understand market structure, potential reactions and possible breakouts. 6️⃣ What Happens When Price Breaks a Trendline? A trendline break may indicate a change in market behaviour. However, a break does not automatically confirm a complete trend reversal. Analysts should examine factors such as: Whether a candle closes beyond the trendline. The strength of the price movement. Whether price retests the broken trendline. The surrounding market structure. Confirmation from other timeframes. Always evaluate the broader market context. 7️⃣ Your Practical Exercise Study the Bitcoin chart in our accompanying illustration. Answer these questions: Question 1: Which swing lows would you connect to draw an uptrend trendline? Question 2: What makes two trendlines form a price channel? Question 3: If Bitcoin breaks below an ascending trendline, does that automatically confirm a bearish trend reversal? Explain. Question 4: How could you combine trendlines with support and resistance analysis? Share your answers in the comments. Explain your reasoning! Final Thought Trendlines and channels help us organise price movements and understand market direction. But remember: markets do not have to respect our drawn lines. A good technical analyst studies price behaviour rather than forcing the market to follow a particular drawing. Next Lesson: Support and Resistance — Finding Key Price Levels. Keep learning.
