What an anaesthetist actually does while the surgeon cuts

Most people think anaesthesia is just the injection that makes you sleep. What you don't see is that while the surgeon is operating, the anaesthetist is working nonstop: holding the airway, keeping oxygen and blood pressure in safe ranges, managing fluids and blood loss, staying ahead of pain, and adjusting everything minute by minute as the surgery changes.

Surgery is the event. Anaesthesia is why you survive the event.

I'll be dropping practical stuff here regularly: how anaesthesia actually works, what really happens in theatre, and exam tips for medical students and residents. Any question about the specialty, drop it in the comments, I'll answer.
